Ziltendorfer lowland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ziltendorfer Niederung is a low plain in Brandenburg .

Location and description

The flood plain protected by dykes from the normal high levels of the Oder is located in the Oder-Spree district of the state of Brandenburg. It consists mainly of alluvial land of the river Oder, which forms a loop to the east and north and here represents the current state border with Poland . In the west the valley is bounded by the Oder-Spree Canal and the Schlaube . Further to the west is the transition to the Ice Age and higher moraine ridges as a natural border . The communities Brieskow-Finkenheerd , Wiesenau , Ziltendorf , Vogelsang and Eisenhüttenstadt are located here (from north to south) . These communities (with the exception of Eisenhüttenstadt) belong to the Brieskow-Finkenheerd office . A not inconsiderable part of the lowland belongs to the municipality of Ziltendorf with the two districts of Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung and Aurith .

history

A starting point for the settlement is the former Cistercian Abbey Neuzelle Monastery , which founded Vorwerke in the Ziltendorfer lowlands in the 16th century . This is how the “Vorwerk Ziltendorf”, from which the Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung later emerged, as well as the “Vorwerk Aurith”, which established the origin of today's village Aurith. After the secularization of the monastery in the 19th century, the agricultural land was affiliated to the newly founded “Stift Neuzelle” as an asset manager and leased. During the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone from 1945 onwards, numerous refugees from the eastern areas were settled in Aurith and in the Ziltendorf suburb . During the construction of the new settlements in the years 1947–1950 Aurith kept his name, while the settlement in the former Vorwerk Ziltendorf is named after the former chairman of the KPD Ernst Thälmann , who was murdered by the National Socialists on August 18, 1944 in Buchenwald concentration camp and has been bearing his name ever since.

Or flood

During the flood of the Oder in 1997 , the Ziltendorfer lowland was the focus of the German media. After heavy rainfall in Poland and the Czech Republic in July 1997, the level of the Oder rose continuously to well over 6 meters and was thus a good 3.50 meters above the usual water level in the summer months. In addition to other endangered areas, the evacuation began in the Ziltendorfer lowlands on July 22, 1997. On July 23, the dike broke at Brieskow-Finkenheerd and one day later, on July 24, the dike broke a few kilometers further south at Aurith. The water masses poured unhindered into the Ziltendorfer lowland and flooded the village of Aurith and the Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung. Due to the timely evacuation measures, there were no victims to complain about. The property damage was considerable, however, not least thanks to national donations , it was largely repaired in the period that followed. However, there were also inconsistencies in the distribution of the donations. Meanwhile, the plans go here as elsewhere in flood-prone areas in the direction not only by natural disasters to increase only the dikes and to strengthen but also, it is possible to address the causes of such high water levels such as forest clearance to proceed while alternative areas for to create water like flood polders and to limit the settlement of endangered regions.
