The Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung is next to Aurith one of the two districts of the community Ziltendorf ( district Oder-Spree ) in the east of Brandenburg .

Location and description

The settlement is located about 3 kilometers northeast of Ziltendorf, 8 kilometers north of Eisenhüttenstadt and 17 kilometers southeast of Frankfurt (Oder) (all information as the crow flies) in the Ziltendorfer lowlands near the Oder and the border with Poland .

Today's Thälmann settlement was founded in the 16th century when the former Cistercian Abbey of Neuzelle Monastery founded Vorwerke . This is how the Vorwerk Ziltendorf emerged, from which the Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung later emerged, as well as the Vorwerk Aurith, which established the origin of today's village Aurith. After the secularization of the monastery at the beginning of the 19th century, the agricultural land was attached to the newly founded Neuzelle Abbey as an asset manager and leased out.

During the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone from 1945 onwards, numerous refugees from the eastern areas were settled in the Ziltendorf suburb, as in Aurith . During the construction of the new settlement in the years 1947–1950, it was given the name Ernst Thälmann, which has been retained to this day .

Or flood

During the flood of the Oder in 1997 , the town was in the focus of the German media. After heavy rainfall in Poland and the Czech Republic in July 1997, the level of the Oder rose continuously to well over 6 meters and was thus a good 3.50 meters above the usual water level in the summer months. In addition to other endangered areas, the evacuation began in the Ziltendorfer lowlands on July 22, 1997. On July 23, the dike broke at Brieskow-Finkenheerd and one day later, on July 24, the dike broke a few kilometers further south at Aurith. The water masses poured unhindered into the Ziltendorfer lowland and flooded the village of Aurith and the Ernst-Thälmann-Siedlung. Thanks to the timely evacuation measures, there were no casualties to complain about. However, the damage to property was not insignificant and was largely repaired in the period that followed, not least thanks to national donations.
