The Chauderon Bridge ( French: Pont Chauderon ) is one of the three major bridges in Lausanne . It is located in the Center district and crosses the Le Flon district .
history
The bridge was built from one advertised by the city competition in 1901. The architect Alphonse Laverrière and Eugène Monod and the engineers Louis de Vallières and Albert Simon won the tender. Construction began in 1904 and lasted a year, so the opening could take place in 1905.
architecture
The 250 meter long bridge consists of six reinforced concrete arches, each with a 28.75 m span, which are supported on masonry pillars. Both bridgeheads are decorated with a pair of stone pylons each .
The bridge arches are built according to the Melan system . With this type of construction, a steel truss bridge girder is first erected, to which the formwork for the concrete is attached, which is then poured and envelops the steel truss. A comparatively simple falsework can be used for the Melan system because it only has to absorb the loads of the steel structure, but not those of the concrete.
