Malik Monk (born February 4, 1998 in Jonesboro , Arkansas , United States ) is an American basketball player .

His brother Marcus played as a professional basketball player in Germany.

career

Monk played for the Bentonville High School team in his home state of Arkansas and, thanks to his strong performance and great development potential, attracted the attention of many of the major universities. Ultimately, he decided against the University of Arkansas , where his brother Marcus studied and played basketball and American football, and accepted the University of Kentucky scholarship offer . There, in his first (and only) season (2016/17), he promptly became the blue-whites' best thrower, Monk scored 19.8 points on average. His total of 754 counters were the seventh best in the entire NCAA Division 1. During the course of the season, Monk showed, among other things, his strengths as a distance shooter and hit 104 three-point throws - in this respect he landed in 21st place nationwide and in first place within the team.

Like his teammates Edrice Adebayo , Isaiah Briscoe , De'Aaron Fox and Isaac Humphries , Monk ended his college career early following the 2016/17 season and signed up for the 2017 NBA draft . In the draft, Monk was selected in eleventh place by the Charlotte Hornets . In his first year in the NBA, things were mixed up for Monk after an ankle injury that he suffered in preparation, before he performed significantly better in the course of the season and especially from the beginning of March 2018. In total, he played 63 games for Charlotte in the 2017/18 season and scored an average of 6.7 points per encounter.

Personal

His older brother, Marcus Monk,  played American football and basketball at the university level. He then played as a professional in the National Football League before playing for two years as a professional basketball player in Germany between 2010 and 2012. In 2012, Marcus Monk won the  championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB with the Oettinger Rockets and was named ProB Player of the Year (named by eurobasket.com).
