Ryan Philip Saunders (born April 28, 1986 in Medina , Minnesota ) is an American basketball coach and former basketball player. He is currently the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also known for his work in game development with the Washington Wizards .

Saunders is the son of NBA basketball coach Flip Saunders . With his father's club change, the family moved to Wisconsin and South Dakota as a child , but moved back to Minnesota when Flip Saunders had received a contract as head coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Saunders graduated from Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota . During his high school years he played basketball on his school team as a guard . After graduating from high school, he graduated from the University of Minnesota and received his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2008 . He played while studying in Minnesota again in the position of Guard (2004-2008) and was temporarily also team captain. In the 2006–2007 season he could not be used due to a hand injury and did not play any games in the 2007–2008 season.

Saunders is also involved in youth basketball camps and charities .

Career as a coach

Saunders stayed at the University of Minnesota after college, where he worked with Tubby Smith for a year . Since 2009 he has been an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards . He became an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014 and an interim coach on January 6, 2019 after the Timberwolves fired Tom Thibodeau . On January 8, 2019, he made his debut against the Oklahoma City Thunder and led his team to victory in that game. He became the senior head coach on May 20, 2019, and became the NBA's youngest head coach at age 33.

The statistics of his first season as coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves show 17 wins and 25 losses.
