The Lamar County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Paris .
geography
The county is located in northeast Texas, borders Oklahoma to the north and is 80 km to the east from Arkansas and 120 km to the southeast from Louisiana . It has an area of 2415 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Red River Counties , Delta Counties , Fannin Counties and, in Oklahoma, Bryan Counties and Choctaw Counties .
history
Lamar County was formed in 1840 from parts of Red River County. It was named after Mirabeau B. Lamar , the third President of the Republic of Texas .

As of the 2000 census , Lamar County had 48,499 people in 19,077 households and 13,468 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.46 percent white, 13.47 percent African American, 1.08 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.33 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 19,077 households, 32.3 percent had children or young people living with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers and 29.4 percent were non-families. 26.1 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,609 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,359. Males had a median income of $ 30,539 versus $ 21,095 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,000. 12.8 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
