Bridge City is a city in Orange County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The city's motto since 1995 has been Building Bridges Together .

geography

The city lies at the intersection of Texas State Highway 73 / 87 and the road in 1442 , about 40 km southeast of Beaumont in southern Orange County, 2 km north of Sabine Lake that connects to the Gulf of Mexico produces and is in the east about 5 miles from the Louisiana border. It has a total area of ​​14 km², of which 0.6 km² is water. The city limits form the Neches River in the north and the Cow Bayou in the east . The distance to Houston to the west is approximately 180 km.

history

The first settlers in this area came shortly before the founding of the Republic of Texas. The place was founded as Prairie View , according to its location at the beginning of the prairie behind the coastal area. In 1936 construction began on an iron bridge over the Neches River for the highway to Port Arthur , 20 km away , which connected the two cities with one another and with Interstate 10. The city, which can be reached via three other bridges from the east and north, was therefore known under the name Bridge City and was renamed to this name a few years later. The first post office opened in 1940.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 8,651 people in 3,195 households and 2,476 families lived here. The population density was 649.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 95.43% White, 0.20% African American, 0.75% Native American, 1.40% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 1.27% other ethnic groups.
