Yorktown is a city in DeWitt County in the American state of Texas .
geography
Yorktown is in southwest DeWitt County. In the area of the city is the Texas State Highway 72 and the Texas State Highway 119. The entire urban area has a size of about 4.5 km².
There is an east side climate with warm summers and relatively mild to cold winters.
history
Yorktown was founded in 1848 by Captain John York and Charles Eckhard, a native of Germany. York had made a name for itself as a soldier in the Texan War of Independence and gave the city its name. In the further course of the 19th century , many immigrants from Germany , Poland and the Czech Republic came to the city. A Catholic church was built in 1867, followed by a Protestant church in 1872 . The city was given particular importance by a railway line that ran through it. In addition, u. a. Mills, breweries and other establishments.
Since 1958 the Western Days have been held annually in Yorktown. In 2010, 2,092 people lived in the city.
