Westhoff (Texas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The place Westhoff is located in DeWitt County in central Texas in the United States of America on Highway 87, 14 miles northwest of Cuero and south of Gonzales (Texas) .

When the railroad from Cuero to Stockdale (Texas) was expanded in 1906 , a place was built along the route that was called Bello until 1909. When a post was added, however, the name had to be changed to avoid confusion with Bells (Grayson County), also in Texas .

The place was then named after William Westhoff Senior, the founder of the neighboring town of Meyersville . The place flourished, for example 4,800 bales of cotton were processed annually. In 1913 the place was hit by a fire disaster that destroyed a large part of the city. The population at that time was 475 people.

The local school was expanded in 1928 and 1961 and formed one of the remaining three rural school districts in the 1960s.

Passenger service to Westhoff ceased on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in 1950.

From 1920 to 1950 Westhoff had about 500 inhabitants, the current population (2000) is about 410 people.
