Escobares is a city on the southern edge of Starr County in the US - State of Texas . Geographically, it forms an eastern appendage of Roma , the county's second largest city. Historically, the urban area is part of the old settlement area , which dates back to the New Spanish era, directly on the Rio Grande . However, the city as such is still relatively young and was only created in 2005 - for administrative reasons, in order to make the structure of the region east of Roma clearer. According to an estimate by the US census, Escobares had 2,512 residents in 2017.

Escobares is geographically located on both sides of the US Highway 83, which is central to the Rio Grande Valley . The southern border is the Rio Grande. In terms of landscape , Escobares is located in the western foothills of the lower Rio Grande Valley - a flat, fertile river bordering region in which mainly citrus fruits and vegetables are intensively cultivated. The landscape is flat and level. In terms of vegetation, it is characterized by bushes , fruit trees and other, mostly low-growing trees . The largest concentration of settlements in the urban area can be found along the US highway; the urban areas in the north and south largely consist of agricultural land. The immediate neighbors clockwise are Roma – Los Saenz, North Escobares, Garceno and La Rosita, on the Mexican river side Guardados de Arriba and Poblado los Ángeles.

The climate in the region is subtropical and subhumid . According to the Handbook of Texas , the temperature data for the surrounding country averages 6.6 ° C in January and around 37 ° C in July. The average annual temperature is 23 ° C, the average annual rainfall is 56 centimeters and the growing season is 305 days. The main rainy month is September at 10.3 millimeters.

Escobares was originally part of the land grants that the New Spanish administration awarded to the colonist José de Escandón. The aim of these land allocations, which took place in the second half of the 18th century , was the intention to connect the previously largely uninhabited lower Rio Grande Valley more closely to the Mexican core area. The population was in the low double-digit range well into the 20th century . In 1940 Escobares had a shop , a school , a church and ten residents. According to various statements, by 2000 the number of inhabitants had increased to just under 1,300 and just under 2,000. It was founded as a city with self-government rights (Incorporated City) in 2005. In 2011 the city opened its own fire station . The school supply is from the Roma Independent School District transferred.

Demographics

According to the calculations of the US census , there were 2,512 residents in the city in 2017. Of these, 1,195 were male , 1,317 female , 1,611 adults , 901 children or adolescents and 247 older than 65 years. The median age was 27.1 years. 2,463 inhabitants or 92% described themselves as Hispanic or Latino , the rest (49 or 2%) as white . Afro-Americans as well as members of the statistically smaller groups Asians , Indian natives were not represented, as well as members of more than one ethnic group.

The median income per household was US $ 19,547 (USD) according to Quickfact information on the census website . For people living in poverty, the census showed a very high figure of 57.9% for the region as well - as well as for the proportion of people without health insurance (36.4%). The determined median value is well below that of the state of Texas (USD 54,700) and the USA as a whole (USD 55,300). It also falls short of the direct comparison value for the county (USD 26,700), the neighboring city of Roma and the county capital Rio Grande City (USD 22,300 and USD 26,700).
