George Bernard Erath

George Bernard Erath (born January 1, 1813 in Vienna , † May 13, 1891 in Waco , Texas ) was an American surveyor, officer and politician.

Georg Erath emigrated to America in 1832 and in 1837 was the first European immigrant to settle in Waco, Texas ("father of Waco"). As a surveyor, he made a significant contribution to the colonization of Texas. He took part in the Texan struggle for independence against Mexico , was a member of the House of Representatives of the then still independent Republic of Texas from 1843 to 1845 and was elected as a Democrat to the Senate of Texas four times after the annexation to the United States (from 1857 for three terms of office, from 1874). In 1858 he founded the Texas Rangers as a border guard.
