The Ellis County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Waxahachie .

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas and about 120 km south of the border with the state of Oklahoma . It has an area of 2465 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Dallas County , Kaufman County , Henderson County , Navarro County , Hill County, and Johnson County .

history

Ellis County was formed on December 20, 1849 from parts of Navarro County. The administrative organization was completed on August 5th of the following year. It was named after Richard Ellis , who was a judge on the Supreme Court of Alabama until 1825 . He was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas and was a member of its Senate.

As of the 2000 census , there were 111,360 people in Ellis County. 1,933 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 37,020 households and 29,653 families. The population density was 46 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.63 percent white, 8.64 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 7.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.86 percent were from two or more races. 18.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 37,020 households, 42.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 64.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, and 19.9 percent were non-families. 16.6 percent were single households and 6.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.31 people.

30.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 95.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 50,350 , and the median income for a family is $ 55,358. Males had a median income of $ 37,613 versus $ 26,612 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,212. 6.8 percent of families and 8.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
