Ennis is a city in Ellis County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located at the junction of Interstate 45 with Highways 34 and 287 as well as highways 85 , 879 , 1183 and 1722 in the southeast of the county in northeast Texas and has a total area of 47.7 km², of which 1.0 km² is water is.

The city was named after Cornelius Ennis , a person in charge and later director of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and former mayor of Houston (1856-1857). The railroad moved its tracks here in 1871 and the first train stopped here in 1872, en route from Corsicana to Dallas . In the same year the first post office was opened in the station building.
Events
Today the city is also known nationwide , mainly for the Texas Motorplex , annually from February to November, mostly weekly racing events with drag racing , drag bikes and muscle cars .
The Polka Festival that takes place every last weekend in May , a commemoration of the first immigrants and settlers to their place of origin, with parade, street dance, costumes, traditional Czech food and polka dance groups, is known far beyond the city limits.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 16,045 people lived here in 5,335 households and 3,947 families. The population density was 344.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 66.57% White, 14.71% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 15.93% other ethnic groups. About 2.03% were of mixed race and 33.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,335 households, 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.4% of these were married couples living together. 14.5% were single mothers and 26.0% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were single households and 10.1% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.45.
30.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6% 18 to 24, 27.7% 25 to 44, 18.5% 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,923 USD , and the median income for a family 44,608 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,585 versus $ 22,855 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,677. 13.0% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.3% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.7% were 65 or older.
