history
In the early 1850s, several newcomers from Cherokee County bought land from landowner Alvin Wright for 50 cents an acre . In 1853 the settler William R. Hudson built a combined residential and commercial building as the first building in the village and named the settlement after the town of Milford in Massachusetts . The following year the settlement received a post office. In 1857 a flour mill started operating in Milford. In 1888 the place was incorporated and WR McDaniel became the first mayor of the newly established city. Two years later, the line of the Dallas and Waco Railway - from 1891 part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad - was built by Milford, making the city an important trading hub.
The main industry towards the end of the 19th century was the cotton industry . In 1892 Milford had a population of 800 people and there were three churches, a bank, a hotel, two cottonseed oil mills and about two dozen additional businesses and two schools in the town. In 1902, Milford became the site of the Texas Presbyterian College for Girls. In 1926 the railway line running through Milford was electrified. In 1929 the population of Milford peaked at around 1200, but the Great Depression caused the population to decline sharply in the following years. In the same year, the girls' college ceased operations. Milford had only 747 residents in 1931, and the population continued to decline in the years that followed, reaching its lowest point of 490 in 1968. In 2018 Milford had 747 residents again.
