history

Carl Cornelius, who owned the rest area on Interstate Highway 35E between Waco and Dallas , which was already in existence at the time, had the settlement Carl's Corner registered as a city in 1986 so that the rest area was no longer in community-free area. Thus Cornelius was able to bypass an alcohol sales ban. In Hill County, which is partially a dry county , alcohol is not allowed in unincorporated areas until 7 a.m. on weekdays and until 11 a.m. on Sundays. Cornelius is a good friend of county musician Willie Nelson , who gave concerts at Carl's Corner on Independence Day in the 1980s .

From 2005 to 2011 the rest area operated under the name "Willie's Station". After the company ran into financial difficulties, the rest area was taken over in May 2011 by TravelCenters of America , which operates 271 rest stops across the United States.
