The Travel Centers of America LLC is the largest private operator of motorway service stations in the United States . The company operates service stations, restaurants and convenience shops under the brand names TA , Petro Shopping Centers and Quaker Steak and Lube and acts as a franchisee for several fast food chains . The company, headquartered in Westlake , Ohio, has more than 270 locations in 43 American states and the Canadian province of Ontario .

TravelCenters of America was founded in 1972 by Phil Saunders under the name Truckstops of America . The company was one of the first chains in the United States to operate several rest stops and was bought by the transport company Ryder System in the year it was founded. In 1984 Truckstops of America was taken over by Standard Oil of Ohio . After its merger with BP in 1993, Truckstops of America was sold to the Clipper Group . In 1996, the Iowa 80 truck stop near Walcott , Iowa, which has been part of TA since 1992, was expanded to 89 acres and 900 truck spaces for $ 3.5 million and has since become the largest truck stop in the world.

In 1997 Truckstops of America merged with rival National Auto / Truckstops and was renamed TravelCenters of America. This company in turn merged with Travel Ports of America shortly thereafter. As a result of the expansion, TravelCenters of America had around 140 locations and employed 12,000 people in 2000. In the same year the company was sold to Oak Hill Capital Partners. In 2006, TravelCenters of America was again bought by Hospitality Properties Trust for approximately $ 1.9 billion. At that time, Forbes listed TA as the 60th largest privately held company in the United States. On February 1, 2007, the company went public on the American Stock Exchange . In May of the same year, TravelCenters of America bought Petro Stopping Centers, founded in 1975 and based in El Paso , with 40 locations.

In 2013, TravelCenters of America bought the convenience store chain Minit Mart for around $ 67 million. In May 2015 TA took over 19 locations of the insolvent gas station operator GasMart and renamed them to Minit-Mart branches. In 2017, Minit Mart had 294 locations in the United States. At the end of 2018, TA Minit Mart sold to the British retail company EG Group .

TA Restaurant Group

The TA Restaurant Group is responsible for the operation of the restaurants at the rest stops. In April 2016, the company operated around 850 restaurants with 43 brand names and employed around 6,200 people. The TA Restaurant Group is a franchisee of the fast-food chains Arby’s , Baskin-Robbins , Burger King , Dairy Queen , Dunkin 'Donuts , Fazoli’s , KFC , Pizza Hut , Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits , Sbarro , Starbucks , Subway , Taco Bell , Tim Hortons and Wendy’s . TA was also a franchisee at Godfather's Pizza until the sale of Minit Mart in 2018 .

In April 2016 TravelCenters of America took over the restaurant chain Quaker Steak & Lube , which in 2018 had 50 locations in fourteen states. The company also owns the restaurant chains Country Pride and Iron Skillet . Furthermore, the TA Restaurant Group has partnerships with several full-service restaurant chains at some locations, including Fuddruckers and IHOP .

TA Truck Service

Under the umbrella brand TA Truck Service, TravelCenters of America operates around 1,100 automotive workshops specializing in trucks. TA Truck Service is also the largest independent tire dealer in the United States. The Sirius XM radio station Road Dog Trucking Channel has broadcast the "Kickin 'the Tires" program since January 2018.
