The city has a motorway access to Cleveland, two golf courses, a shopping center and some light industrial operations such as the Nordson Corporation .

In 2003 a branch office of Cleveland State University (CSU) started operations.

history

The area of Westlake dates back to Dover Township, an area roughly square in shape with a side length of 5 miles (8.045 km) bounded to the north by Lake Erie, to the west by neighboring Lorain County and to the south at Brookpark Road was. The first European settlers reached the township on October 10, 1810. They cleared the originally completely forested area and practiced agriculture, including orchards and viticulture.

With the construction of Nickel Plate Road through the northern part of the township, Dover received a rail connection to Cleveland in 1881. In the following years, numerous wealthy Clevelanders built their summer residences along the lake shore. In 1900 Dover had 2233 inhabitants.

On July 20, 1901, the northern strip between the railway line and the lake shore was spun off as the Bay Township (today: Bay Village ). The border line ran along the Nickel Plate Road and marks the northern city limits of Westlake to this day.

In 1908 the southeastern part of the township was founded as North Olmsted . Since then, the boundary between them has been about halfway between Center Ridge Road and Lorain Road. The remainder of the township eventually formed in 1911 as Dover Village. Dover Village, in turn, was renamed Westlake in 1940 to avoid confusion with Dover in Tuscarawas County .

While the split off area between the lakeshore and the railway line was already densely built up before 1900, the area south of it remained agricultural for decades. Only after the Second World War did Westlake transform itself from an agricultural settlement into a residential community. The population grew from (1950) 4,912 to (1960) 12,906 and (1980) 19,483 to (2000) 31,719 inhabitants. The completion of Interstate 90 Chicago – Cleveland in 1976, which, in contrast to the railroad, now ran directly through Westlake and shortened the travel time to Cleveland to around 15 minutes, played a major role in this development .

In addition to Bay Village in the north and North Olmsted in the southeast, other neighboring communities are Rocky River in the northeast, Fairview Park in the east and Avon in the west and North Ridgeville in the southwest.
