Fairview Park (until 1948: Fairview ) is a city in Cuyahoga County in the US state of Ohio . It is located 15.6 kilometers southwest of Cleveland and not far from Lake Erie , is 4.7 square miles (12.17 km²) and had (2000) 17,572 inhabitants, 96% of them white.
The city is located immediately west of the Rocky River , whose 30 meter deep valley is part of the Cleveland Metroparks and forms the border with Cleveland. Other neighboring communities are the city of Rocky River in the north, North Olmsted in the west and Brook Park in the south. Interstate 480 , part of Cleveland's southern ring road , runs along the southern edge of the city . The main thoroughfare is Lorain Road, which runs centrally and in a southwest direction through the city and is an arterial route from Cleveland.
Fairview Park is a residential community only; the city has two public and two church primary schools, one public middle school, five parks, six churches, a local museum and two shopping centers. An Indian burial place is suspected under the local cemetery.
Historically, the urban area forms the southwestern part of Rockport Township, which encompassed the entire area around the confluence of the Rocky River and Lake Erie. The place was removed from this in 1910, initially under the name Fairview. To avoid confusion with a place of the same name in Ohio , the name was changed to Fairview Park in 1948. The city was raised in 1950, the current form of city government has existed since January 1, 1959. The population rose from 300 at the time of the spin-off in 1910 to 9,000 in 1950 and peaked in 1970 with 21,681 inhabitants. Since then, the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly.
