history

The first Tim Horton restaurant (the "s" was added later) opened in 1964 in Hamilton , Ontario , Canada . The company was founded by Tim Horton , a well-known ice hockey player in the National Hockey League . Not long after Horton opened his first store, he met Ron Joyce , a former Hamilton cop. In 1965 Joyce took over the management of the first restaurant and opened two more by 1967. Joyce and Horton became equal partners in the company. After Horton's death in a car accident in 1974, Joyce took over his shares and became the sole owner of the 40 branches that already existed. Now began a period of aggressive expansion of the branch network and product selection. In 1991 the 500th branch was opened in Aylmer (Québec) .

Tim Hortons' aggressive expansion resulted in two big changes in the coffee and donut market:

  1. Independent donut shops have been nearly eliminated in Canada.
  2. Canada now surpasses all other states in terms of donut shops to residents.

On August 8, 1995, Tim Hortons (TDL Group Ltd., originally Tim Donut Limited ) merged with Wendy’s International Inc. With the merger, Joyce became the largest shareholder in Wendy's. Many combined stores with both brands opened in Canada and the northeastern United States under Wendy's leadership.

In 2004, Tim Hortons expanded into Rhode Island , Connecticut and Massachusetts in the United States by acquiring 42 Bess Eaton coffee and donut restaurants.

Due to the strength and profitability of the Tim Hortons brand, Wendy's International Inc. sold between 15 and 18% of its shares in TDL Group in March 2006 under pressure from shareholders. The remainder of the shares should be sold by the end of 2006.

From 2006 to 2011 Tim Hortons ran a restaurant at the Canadian Armed Forces base in Kandahar . The franchisee here was Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services.

In August 2014, Burger King Worldwide Inc. took over Tim Hortons Inc. for C $ 12.5 billion (around EUR 8.6 billion). The two companies were merged to form the new Holding Restaurant Brands International .
