history

Ferris Town Hall

The Ferris settlement began in 1874 during the construction of the Houston and Texas Central Railway . The place was named after Justus W. Ferris, a lawyer from Waxahachie. The land on which the city lies today was made available by the large landowner McKnight for the construction of the route and a settlement. In the year it was founded, a post office and a general store were opened in Ferris. In 1884 the city had about 300 inhabitants, a grist mill , several cottonseed oil mills , four churches and a school. On September 30, 1892, Ferris was incorporated by a council resolution.

1904 had 901 inhabitants, at the 1910 census there were already 1233 inhabitants. A little later, the Ferris Brick Company was founded in the city, which, due to the clay minerals in the soil in the region around Ferris, laid the foundation for a change in the main industry in the city. In 1914, six brick factories were in operation in Ferris. By 1920 the population rose even further to 1,586 people. As a result of the Great Depression in the late 1920s, many companies in Ferris went bankrupt and many residents left the city. After the end of the Second World War , the economy picked up again, shortly after the war there were four brickworks again in Ferris. Because of this, Ferris was also known as the "Brick Capital of the Nation" and "City that Bricked the World". The Ferris Annual Brick Festival takes place regularly in the city towards the end of April .

Ferris had 1735 inhabitants in 1950 and 1807 in 1960. The expansion of the Dallas-Fort-Worth metroplex and the construction of Interstate Highway 45 in the 1960s led to a further increase in the population in Ferris, so that the city exceeded the 2000-inhabitant mark for the first time in the 1960s. The number of businesses in Ferris has decreased since the 1980s, and the city is now developing into a commuter community .
