Richard Ellis (politician)
Richard Ellis (born February 14, 1781 in Lunenburg County , Virginia , † December 20, 1846 in Bowie County , Texas ) was an American politician .
Ellis, previously a judge at the Alabama Supreme Court , settled in what is now Texas in 1834. In 1836 he chaired the convention on which the independence of the Republic of Texas from Mexico was declared. After he was Ellis County named.
