Archer City is the county seat of Archer County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America .

geography

The city is located in north-central Texas, close to the north-south trending US Highway 281 to the east and the east-west trending US Highway 82, is about 55 km from Oklahoma . The distance to Dallas in the southeast is about 220 km and to Lubbock in the west about 300 km.

The settlement began in 1876 as a supply depot for three planned different railroad lines, the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad , the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and the Red River and Rio Grande Railroad , which should run here. The settlement was named after Branch Tanner Archer , a Texas police chief and a leading figure during the Texas Revolution . Two years later the first small post office opened and in 1879 CB Hutto settled nearby, which provided land for the future city.

The first religious association was founded by eight members and belonged to the Baptist Church . The mass was held in the saloon. Later the city administration decided to ban the sale of alcohol and from then on the saloon served only as a church. In 1884 the place had 150 inhabitants and a few shops. The most important commodity was cotton. In 1890 there were 250 inhabitants and there was a weekly newspaper. A stagecoach with mail and passengers traveled to and from Wichita Falls every day, a stone prison had been built, as well as two other churches and a brick hotel.

The first oil production, about 20 km from the city, began around 1912 and in 1914 two of the railway lines planned as early as 1876 were finally built, but by different companies: the Wichita Falls and Southern Railroad and the Southwestern Railroad . Further oil discoveries shaped the face of the city and at the end of 1926 there were 17 oil fields with 411 delivery pumps in the vicinity of Archer City. After the first oil boom, the small town grew only slowly and had its highest population in 1970 with 2025 people.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, 1,848 people lived here in 758 households and 506 families. The population density was 322.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population is composed of 97.56% White, 0.00% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.81% other ethnic groups. About 0.92% are descended from two or more races, and 2.33% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.

Of the 758 households, 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.2% of these were married couples living together. 8.4% were single mothers and 33.2% were non-families. 30.5% of all households were single households and there were people living in 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

25.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5% 18 to 24, 25.9% 25 to 44, 22.5% 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 88.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.1 men.

The median income for a household in the 29,886 USD , and the median income for a family 36,563 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,524 versus $ 18,977 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,140. 13.5% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 13.8% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.9% were 65 or older.

Born in Archer City

  • Larry McMurtry (* 1936), award-winning author, was born in Wichita Falls, but grew up and lives in Archer City. Many small towns in his novels such as The Last Picture Show are modeled on Archer City. The Oscar-winning film adaptation of Last Picture Show of the same name was therefore also shot in Archer City in 1971, as was the sequel Texasville (1990).
