The traces of Bonham, one of the oldest cities in Texas, go back to the year 1837, when Bailey Inglish built a two-story log cabin called Fort Inglish here about 2 km from today's center . Inglish and other acquaintances settled here from the summer of 1837 and the settlement was named Bois D'Arc . In 1843 the Texas congress gave the city the name Bloomington , which was then renamed Bonham in honor of James Butler Bonham , a hero and defender of the Alamo . On February 2, 1848, Bonham was registered as a city.
After connecting to the Texas and Pacific Railroad , the place began to grow and in 1885 there were six churches, three colleges, two public schools, three weekly newspapers, a sawmill, two flour mills, electricity supply and 2,300 residents. In 1890 an oil mill, tram and ice factory as well as the Texas Power and Light Company as a local power generator were added. In 1925 the place was connected to the gas supply.
During the Second World War , a US Air Force training camp and flight school were set up near Bonham , as was a prisoner-of-war camp for German and German soldiers. Parts of the camp can still be viewed today.
