Charlie Cole (born 1955 in Bonham , Texas , † September 5, 2019 in Bali ) was an American photographer and photojournalist .

Life

Cole was in 1955 as the son of a military chaplains of the US Air Force was born in Texas, but grew up in Colorado Springs , where his father in the nearby Peterson Air Force Base was stationed. After graduating from school, Cole studied journalism at the University of Texas at Denton until 1978 .

He first worked for the Colorado Springs Sun . Through his father, who had meanwhile been transferred to Japan , he had good contacts in Asia and in particular with the military units stationed there. Together with his college friend Steve Gardner, Cole left the United States in August 1980. Both first settled in Japan, where they pursued careers as freelance photographers. Cole then worked for publications such as Newsweek , Time and The New York Times . Among other things, Cole documented the unrest in the Philippines in 1985 and student protests in South Korea .

His shot of Tank Man in the Tian'anmen massacre in China was named Press Photo of the Year 1989. Cole's photo of Tank Man was one of four photos explored in the 2005 documentary Looking for an Icon . Cole himself always regretted that the photo had become an icon because it dwarfed the achievements of other photographers that day.

In a motorcycle accident in Tokyo in the mid-1990s, Cole was seriously injured and feared an amputation of his leg. He let his work as a photographer rest for a while. He then moved to Jakarta and later settled with his Indonesian wife in Bali , where he worked as a freelance photographer for the next 15 years. On September 5, 2019, Cole died at his home at the age of 64 from complications from sepsis that resulted from an injury to his leg.
