Mooringsport is a city in Caddo Parish in the US state of Louisiana . About 800 people live in an area of more than three square kilometers.

Mooringsport is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas .

geography

Mooringsport is located in the northwest of the state of Louisiana, about seven kilometers from the western border with Texas and 37 kilometers from the northern border with Arkansas. To the north, the city is bordered by Caddo Lake , an approximately 103 square kilometers large lake in the states of Louisiana and Texas. A few kilometers to the east is a wildlife reserve.

Nearby cities include Oil City (5 km north), Vivian (17 km north), Shreveport (19 m southeast), Marshall (35 km southwest), and Jefferson (38 km west).

history

Mooringsport is the first parish in northern Caddo Parish with a permanent settlement. In 1837 Timothy Mooring of Henderson County , Tennessee, moved here with his wife and nine children. He built a ferry through the nearly 20 km long swamp to transport cotton from Shreveport to what is now Mooringsport. To protect the cotton, he built a shed near the ferry. The ferry became known as Mooring's Port .

The two bridges over Caddo Lake

In the 1840s and 1850s, Mooringsport Road was built to Shreveport to give more settlers a better route to the larger market for their products. In 1854 a mail route to Mooringsport was set up, and an official post office followed in 1870. In the 1870s and 1880s, the city served as a port for cotton shipping to Texas. A trestle bridge was built for rail traffic in 1897 . Due to the growing importance of rail transport, steamboat transport across Caddo Lake continued to decline.

In 1914, a vertical lifting bridge was built over Caddo Lake, which finally ended the use of steamships. A new bridge was later built so that the old bridge was no longer used.

In 1897 and 1941 a severe tornado hit the mooring area, both times destroying the city's industrial estates and business centers. The years 1920 and 1928 also had a negative impact on the city's economy. It has not fully recovered from the global economic crisis in the early 1930s.

In the 1950s, several schools in northern Caddo Parish were united, so that the smaller towns shared one high school. The Mooringsport School , founded in 1911, closed in the 1970s and was later restored and reopened. In the 1970s the city received a prison, a new police station and a fire department. A local company supplies parts of Ark-La-Tex with electricity.

The Mooringsport Mini-Museum was opened in 1987 for the city's 150th anniversary . It shows numerous objects from the history of the city and the region.

traffic

Louisiana Highway 538 runs from north to south-east of the city and joins Louisiana Highway 1 north and south of the city . Within the urban area is the Louisiana Highway 767 , but after a short route it merges into the Louisiana Highway 169 , which in turn merges into a junction about 60 kilometers further south.

US Highway 71 runs about ten kilometers east of the city in a north-south direction as well as Interstate 49 , which in the north leads to the Texarkana cities and in the south to Shreveport and Alexandria .
