St. Vincent's College was founded at the suggestion of the priest Thaddeus Amat, who had come to California in 1855 to promote the Catholic mission there. Initially, the college was located east of the old City Plaza in Lugo House. From around 1882 it resided in a new building on the corner of Hill Street, Broadway, Sixth and Seventh Street. In 1911 the school was closed because the Jesuits had taken over their educational projects in the USA. The school then merged into the Jesuit-run Los Angeles College, which in 1918, after it was officially recognized by the State of California, was renamed "Loyola College of Los Angeles".

In 1973 Loyola College merged with Marymount College and has been operating under the name Loyola Marymount University ever since .
