Idiophone , percussion instrument

The caisa is a convex steel pan that is played with the hands or with mallets . It was produced by Bill Brown until the end of 2015, from 2016 production in Dortmund was handed over to André Krause and Michael Pabst.

The name Caisa goes back to the excitement cry "Caiso!", Which is called at the carnival time in Trinidad , when a calypso is particularly successful and has also become a synonym for the calypso.

description

9 to 12 clay fields are hammered into the upper part of the Caisa, which is curved upwards. It is made of sheet steel, has a diameter of 58 to 61 cm, weighs 4 kg and is between 13 and 20 cm high, depending on the mood.

The lower part is a metal base plate that is attached to the upper part using a special screw connection. It has a diameter of 45 cm and weighs 2 kg. There is a 10 mm thread in the center of the base plate into which a wooden foot can be screwed. Three more holes in the base plate are used to set up the Caisa on a stand.

With the base screwed on, the instrument has the shape of a mushroom when viewed from the side .

Style of play

Caisa Cosma (sound sample)

The instrument can either be played with the foot between the legs on the lap or placed on the wooden foot or a stand. The Caisa can be played with the hands, similar to the Hang . On the other hand, it can be played with mallets. The sound becomes richer and brighter in overtones , similar to that of conventional steel pans.
