Strudelbach in Riet

With around 900 inhabitants, Riet is the smallest suburb of the large district town of Vaihingen an der Enz . The former wine village is at an altitude of 250-350 m in the Strudelbachtal , about five kilometers southeast of the core town of Vaihingen.

geography

location

Riet is located in the Strudelbachtal, which runs in a south-north direction, on the Strudelbach, a southern tributary to the Enz . Before the district reform, it was relatively centrally located in the old district of Vaihingen, but is now on the western edge of the Ludwigsburg district.

Riet is on the German half-timbered street .

Surroundings

The next surrounding villages are (clockwise from the north) Enzweihingen , Hochdorf an der Enz , Eberdingen , Nussdorf . The landscape is characterized by the deeply cut valley, deciduous and mixed forests and steppe heath. Agriculture takes up a relatively small part of the area.

Terraced vineyards are laid out on the steep slopes around the village, which today are largely overgrown and only occasionally cultivated as a part-time or hobby.

history

Origins

Celtic burial mounds in the Riet district prove that the area was settled as early as the first millennium BC. A later Roman settlement is also documented. The first documentary mention of Riet can be found in the Lorsch Codex as Villa Reoth (Dorf Riet) on the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch Monastery .

The origin of the place name is not certain. A language shift from Villa Roth is possible , as is the modification from Ried as an indication of an originally swampy terrain. Or the modification of Reuth or Reutte as an indication of the clearing of a forest area, which is most likely with the type of terrain and vegetation.

Advised in the Middle Ages

In 1188 a castrum (dt .: castle) Riet is mentioned in a contract between Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa and King Alfons VIII of Castile , in which the marriage between Friedrich's son Konrad and Alfons daughter Berengaria was agreed. This castle, which is believed to be in Riet near Vaihingen, was part of the bride's morning gift along with 29 other Staufer goods . However, this marriage was never put into practice.

In Riet there were three other castles in addition to the castle, which is still preserved and inhabited today and was once a moated castle. One was located roughly at the site of today's parish hall on the village square. Remnants of the foundation wall found during construction work suggest that the two other castles stood at the southern and northern ends of today's Paracelsusstrasse.

Riet is historically connected to Eberdingen and Nussdorf through the noble family of the Counts of Reischach , who owned Riet for a long time and several times .

The place Riet was mainly inhabited by servants of the castles, who also cultivated the vineyards of the castle estate. As a result, other agriculture (arable farming, livestock farming) has never played a significant role.

From the 14th century Riet belonged to the Vogtei Vaihingen and its successor organizations Oberamt, Kreis etc. and has been incorporated into Vaihingen since 1973.

Advised in the industrial age

After the castles and aristocratic houses were no longer the main employer, the citizens of Rieter oriented themselves strongly towards the new industrial centers of Vaihingen and the greater Stuttgart area. The Flattich haulage company, which has been based in the town since the 1920s, ensures good transport connections.

On February 1, 1972, Riet was incorporated into the city of Vaihingen an der Enz.

coat of arms

Former Riet coat of arms

The former municipal coat of arms of Riet shows a lying golden stag pole on a black shield head, underneath on a golden shield a sloping black riding hoe.

The stag bar shows that it belongs to Württemberg, the Reithaue refers to the history of Riet as a wine village.

The coat of arms in its current form and the blue and yellow flag were awarded in 1966.

In an official seal from the 1920s, the Riet coat of arms is depicted with three stag sticks.

Infrastructure

economy

Riet not only provides skilled workers for nearby large companies such as Bosch or Behr, several companies have also settled in Riet. The largest include the Flattich bus company, the Holzbau Leibfried company, the Hauser and Munz freight forwarders and, until 2003, the Hauser aluminum foundry and stamping shop. There are also several small craft businesses and trading shops (e.g. beverage market, village shop, farm shop, flower shop).

The Gasthaus zur Eintracht on the village square was known far beyond Riet. The second restaurant in town is the restaurant zum Strudelbächle.

Public life

There is a kindergarten and a primary school in the village. A citizens' office as a branch of the town hall is located on the village square.

Associations and interest groups

Riet has several clubs, some with a long history, including the sports club SV Riet e. V.

Attractions

The lock

Castle, east facade
Castle, south facade

The castle used to have a circumferential, deep, walled moat that could be briefly flooded with water from the Strudelbach in an emergency.

During the Second World War the castle was home to some bombed-out citizens of Pforzheim and Stuttgart, and later it was also home to displaced people.

The parish hall

The parish hall, which was the rectory until the 1980s, stands on the site of a former Rieter castle.

Stephanuskirche

In the church there is still a wooden column of the Count's chair with the coat of arms of the Lords of Reischach.

The pump house

The pump house served to supply Nussdorf with water and was designed in 1902 by Oesterlen & Schmid, Esslingen, and built in 1905. At the height of today's Robert-Bosch-Straße, a 130 m long water channel made of sheet steel branched off the Strudelbach and led it into the pump house. There the pump system was operated with a drop height of approx. 1.5 m over a medium-sized water wheel , which at 2.4 l / s delivered around 107 m³ of river water as drinking water to Nussdorf every day. In the 1960s, Nussdorf was connected to the public water network and the pump house was shut down as a result.

Today the pump house is a popular meeting place and event location of the Association for Village Development Riet DER e. V.
