The Strudelbach is an approximately 15 km long right tributary of the lower Enz in Baden-Württemberg .

geography

course

The Strudelbach rises at the sports field in the village of Flacht in the municipality of Weissach in the Böblingen district and flows in a north-easterly direction through the sometimes narrow Strudelbach valley, which is up to 100 m deep in the landscape. After Weissach itself and before Eberdingen, it crosses the border with the Ludwigsburg district . The next place on the bank is the village of Riet , which, like the following estuary, Enzweihingen, belongs to the town of Vaihingen an der Enz . After it has taken its by far the most important tributary Kreuzbach from the left in Enzweihingen , the Strudelbach flows into the Enz after a little over 15 km from the left .

The Strudelbach is a natural border between the Strohgäu and the Heckengäu .

Catchment area

The Strudelbach has a catchment area of around 127 km², to which its large tributary, Kreuzbach, contributes more than half. From a natural point of view, it is part of the southwestern Neckar Basin with parts of its sub-areas Enz-Grenzbach-Heckengäu , then Glems-Strudelbach-Platte , finally a gusset of the Lower Enz Valley . Its greatest height on a flat forest crest in Stockhau between the village of Perouse in the city of Rutesheim and Rutesheim itself is on the southeastern border and reaches 487.6  m above sea level. NHN .

The eastern watershed borders the catchment area of the Glems , an even deeper tributary of the Enz ; beyond the northern watershed, the Enz itself flows so close that it does not receive any significant tributaries from the sheath. In the west the Kirnbach flows in front of the Strudelbach to the Enz, in the southwest the Würm competes , the drainage of which reaches it indirectly via the lower Nagold .

Tributaries

Some not very long dry valleys and only a few backwaters run towards the Strudelbach.

  • Bonlandenbach , from the right opposite Weissach - Ölmühle , 2.0 km
  • (Auengraben), from the left immediately to Eberdingen , under 0.4 km
  • → (exit of the mill canal of the paper mill), to the right on the southern outskirts of Vaihingen an der Enz - Enzweihingen
  • Kreuzbach , from the left in southern Enzweihingen, 21.3 km and 71.7 km²
  • ← (return of the mill canal of the paper mill), from the right in Enzweihingen one hundred meters after the previous one, 0.6 km

history

The history of settlement in the Strudelbach can be proven to date back to the 4th millennium BC. BC back.

The Strudelbach was never a traffic route because it was too small. Its water, however, drove many mills; There were at least ten on the Strudelbach and its hydropower is still used in at least two companies.

The brook has a catchment area of 54.4 km² up to the inflow of the only permanent tributary of the Kreuzbach from the left in the mouth of Enzweihingen, which the longer Kreuzbach then more than doubles with its partial catchment area of 71.7 km². At its own mouth, less than 1.5 km down from here and 15.3 km below its source, it is 127.3 km². Despite this large drainage area and although the stream profile is quite narrow, especially in the local areas, the Strudelbach is not known to have been exposed to any serious flooding, as is the case with other rivers in the area. The Strudelbach can still expand widely between the villages.

During the last flood on July 6, 2006, a discharge of 13 m³ / s was measured in Enzweihingen below the Kreuzbach inflow, the average being around 2 m³ / s. Apart from cleaning work, there is no known damage to the villages as a result of this event.

According to contemporary witnesses, the largest flood of the Strudelbach so far was in February 1940, when, in addition to a strong thermal break with rapid snowmelt, heavy rain was added. Only the streets and gardens directly on the Strudelbach were flooded.

environment

The Strudelbach flows in an agriculturally and industrially little used valley.

The steep side slopes of the Strudelbachtal, especially at the confluences of small side valleys, were used by winemakers for a long time. Today, wine is only occasionally grown here as a hobby. Some former vineyards are used as recreational areas; however, many have now become completely overgrown and offer valuable habitats for plants and animals.
