history

Middle Ages and early modern times

Weissach was first mentioned in documents in 1100 and 1254. As early as the 12th and 13th centuries, the Maulbronn monastery acquired more and more property in Weissach ( Kapfenhardt Castle ) and exercised the local rule taken over by the Counts of Vaihingen from around 1150 and soon also the church patronage. With the Reformation in the old Württemberg areas, the Maulbronn monastery was converted into a monastery school according to Reformation standards and was subordinate to the House of Württemberg . Due to these historical origins, Weissach was now part of the Wuerttemberg monastery office in Maulbronn until 1808 . The traditional history of Weissach is also reflected in the townscape and the existing historical structure: after a major fire in 1791, the town had to be almost completely rebuilt, so most of the old buildings were built after 1791. The fortified church with a stand-alone defense tower, gaden (pantry) and the former manor house within the wall are from the time before 1791. The nationally known church was previously surrounded by two walls and corresponded to a fortified church in the real sense. The former tithe barn now houses the local library. The rectory, the bakery, the old school and various historical farmsteads are also characteristic of the village. Weissach was shaped by agriculture for centuries, and this was evident for a very long time in the everyday culture of the inhabitants.

19th century

With the reorganization of the young Kingdom of Württemberg at the beginning of the 19th century, Weissach first came to the Oberamt Leonberg (1808/09) and then to the Oberamt Vaihingen , while Flacht stayed with the Oberamt Leonberg.

20th century

In 1906 Weissach got a connection to the route network of the Württemberg railway via the Strohgäubahn operated by the Württemberg branch lines . The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led in 1938 to the affiliation of Weissach and Flacht to the newly founded district of Leonberg . In 1945 the places became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. By the end of the Second World War at the latest, there has been a rapid structural change in the economy, society and everyday culture. In the last 60 years of its history, Weissach has developed more strongly than ever before. The number of farms has decreased to a few, the place has increased its settlement area enormously and its population has more than doubled since 1946. Most of the working population today find their livelihood in industry, trade and commerce. A milestone in the development from a village to an industrial and residential community was the establishment of the Porsche company (Porsche Engineering Group GmbH) on Weissach's marking area in 1961 .

Weissach legend

In an emergency, the municipality of Weissach had to pledge parts of forests in Bonlanden and in Maisental to Maulbronn Monastery. The clause said that the money would have to be returned to the abbot personally at 12 noon on a certain day in 1210, otherwise the forest would decay. The mayor and the magistrate of Weissach arrived punctually in Maulbronn, where it was explained to them that the abbot was not there just yet. You should be patient and eat and drink until the abbot returns. They were given good food and wine, so that they soon stopped paying attention to the time. The abbot finally came shortly after 12 p.m. and told the Weissach people that he had not received the money at 12 p.m. and that the forest had become part of the monastery. Thereupon the Weissachers withdrew annoyed. In revenge, the Weissachers murdered the abbot two years later, when he was already outlawed and therefore no punishment was threatened. The protective abbot is still the main character of the market fountain today.

Incorporations

On December 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Flacht was incorporated into Weissach as part of the district reform .

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The station

The Strohgäubahn to Korntal connects Weissach to the rail network; there is a connection to the Stuttgart S-Bahn . However, the end section west of Heimerdingen is no longer used as scheduled, so that there is only a connection via bus lines. All connections are part of the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association with uniform tariffs . The regional bus service is carried out by the Wöhr-Tours company. It connects Weissach, Flacht, Perouse, Rutesheim and Leonberg. From Leonberg, as in Korntal, there is a connection to the Stuttgart S-Bahn via the S6. Weissach is occasionally served by steam locomotives while the museum is in operation.

The L 1177 runs through the village. The nearby A8 can be reached via the Rutesheim and Heimsheim junctions.

Established businesses

In Weissach, in the direction of Mönsheim and Flacht, there has been a test track for the sports car manufacturer Porsche from Zuffenhausen since 1962 . In October 1971 the company's development center was set up on the enlarged site. Porsche's racing vehicles are produced in the development and motorsport center in Weissach. It is located approx. 25 km from the main factory in Zuffenhausen and grew from approx. 38 hectares of land in 1960 to 68 hectares in 2008. In 1991, 2,300 people were employed. In addition to company buildings, various variants of a circuit and a skid pad (sling plate) are available not only for development, but also for training Porsche drivers. In April 2013, 4,500 people were already employed and a further expansion was approved.

Both the Weissach axle and the optional “Weissach package” for the Porsche 918 were named after the municipality.

The exhaust gas center of the automotive industry (ADA) has also been located in the Porsche development center since 1996, a joint project between Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and VW for basic research on exhaust gas aftertreatment systems. The upcoming closure of ADA was announced on February 21, 2018.
