The Korntal train station is located in Korntal-Münchingen at route kilometer 3.6 of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway and is the starting point of the Strohgäubahn . It is served by the Stuttgart S-Bahn and trains of the Württemberg railway company.

history

The Evangelical Brethren Congregation Kornthal had around 600 inhabitants in the 1860s. Since Pietists only founded the community on the Kornthal manor in 1819 , it only had a very small area. Many of the residents worked away from home and used the Zuffenhausen station after the opening of the Württembergische Zentralbahn in 1847 .

When the state parliament approved the construction of the Black Forest Railway through the Strohgäu on August 13, 1865, the construction of a Korntal station was still not certain. The connection to the rail network is also thanks to the citizens of the larger community of Weil im Dorf , who asked the royal government for a train station in order not to be economically disadvantaged.

As the first and, for the time being, only station between Zuffenhausen and Ditzingen , the Royal Württemberg State Railway opened the Kornthal station on September 23, 1868 - later also called Kornthal-Weil in the village . The two-story entrance building with its reddish sandstones still exists. After the spelling reform in 1904, the place name and thus the station name changed to Korntal and Korntal-Weil in the village.

From 1898 onwards, several municipalities campaigned for the construction of a railway line between Zuffenhausen and Ludwigsburg through the northern Heckengäu to Pforzheim . The railway committee quickly refrained from using Pforzheim as the end point. Münchingen could also not have been taken into account if the railway line had branched off in Ludwigsburg. In order to save further, the starting point was only set up in Korntal. On August 13, 1906, Württembergische Nebenbahnen AG put the line to Weissach into operation.

Since December 30, 1926, the Feuerbach municipal tram has been running from Feuerbach to Gerlingen . It gave passengers to and from Weil im Dorf a more comfortable way to travel and saved the long walk. As a result, the Korntal train station recorded falling passenger numbers. The name Korntal-Weil disappeared in the village. On December 1, 1937, the Deutsche Reichsbahn completed the double-track expansion of the section between Zuffenhausen and Korntal. The electrification from Zuffenhausen to Leonberg took place on May 15, 1939.

After the Second World War, Korntal had finally developed into a residential suburb of Stuttgart. On June 30, 1958, the Ministry of the Interior gave the place city rights. In the meantime, over 8,000 people lived in the former Brethren Congregation.

In May 1962, the transport scientist Professor Walther Lambert presented his plans for an S-Bahn network for the state capital to the Stuttgart city council. It was also intended to replace the electric suburban operation between Stuttgart and Weil der Stadt , which was set up in 1939 . With the opening of the S6 S-Bahn line on October 1, 1978, the Deutsche Bundesbahn implemented the ideas. The Strohgäubahn, on the other hand, was threatened with shutdown again and again due to a lack of passengers. Their electrification and integration into the Stuttgart Stadtbahn network was also planned. Thanks to investments by the districts of Ludwigsburg and Böblingen, it was retained.

outlook

The S-Bahn station is to be made barrier-free by 2030.
