The station Renningen is a railway junction in Renningen where the Rankbach Railway in the Württembergische Schwarzwaldbahn flows. It is a station in the network of the Stuttgart S-Bahn .

history

State Railroad Time

From 1865 it was clear that Renningen should receive a railway connection. The completion of the Black Forest Railway was delayed, however, so that the Royal Württemberg State Railway opened it in stages. On December 1, 1869, the Ditzingen - Weil section of the city was inaugurated .

The train station was then about a kilometer north of the village. Today's Bahnhofstrasse was a dirt road that led over the Wörnetäcker, Ried- and Stegwiesen to the new traffic structure. The community widened it shortly before the route opened. Carters, on the other hand, used the road to Rutesheim and left it at the level of the train station. There the community laid a dead straight paved road (today's Alte Bahnhofstrasse).

As a freight bypass around the Stuttgart basin , the state railroad began building the Rankbachbahn in 1913. It established a connection between the Gäu and the Black Forest Railway between Böblingen and Renningen . Commissioning took place on December 23, 1914, initially to Sindelfingen , then on October 1, 1915 to Renningen. Also in 1913, engineers proposed the slab track , which was to run from Renningen via Friolzheim to Mühlacker . The state railroad postponed these plans and the Deutsche Reichsbahn did not implement them.

Reichsbahn time

After the First World War and the subsequent economic crisis had been overcome, the demand for passenger transport increased on the Rankbachbahn. Many Renninger and Malmsheimers found new jobs at the Daimler plant (from 1926 Daimler-Benz plant ) in Sindelfingen. Children and young people used the connection to go to the middle school in Sindelfingen or to the Karlsgymnasium in Böblingen. But the access offer remained limited.

The municipal administrations of Renningen and Malmsheim unsuccessfully asked the Reichsbahndirektion Stuttgart for an improvement. At the beginning of 1932 the mayor of Renningen put the management under pressure again. He and the local council threatened to try to continue the Stuttgart - Leonberg bus line if the Reichsbahn did not allow more trains to run in the future. In Stuttgart they were unimpressed.

In 1937 the Air Force opened the Malmsheim airfield , north of Renningen. It received its own siding to supply it. The branch was northeast of the station. The course can still be seen today.

To improve local transport, the Reichsbahn decided to electrify part of the Black Forest Railway. On March 9, 1939, the trains were able to use the second track between Leonberg and Renningen. On December 18, 1939, electrical operation began between Stuttgart's main train station and Weil der Stadt, while at the same time being integrated into Stuttgart's suburban traffic .

Bundesbahnzeit, Deutsche Bahn AG and the 21st century

After the Second World War, the number of passengers between Renningen and Böblingen fell due to increasing individual traffic. On September 29, 1970, the Deutsche Bundesbahn finally stopped passenger traffic on the Sindelfingen – Renningen section.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the desire for an S-Bahn line between Renningen and Böblingen arose. The planned S60 S-Bahn line should be available to commuters in 2006. However, increases in costs, the resulting lack of financial resources and extensive renovations delayed reactivation. The S60 operated from June 2010, but only between Böblingen and Maichingen . Since December 8, 2012, it has served the entire route from Böblingen to Renningen.

It is also planned to reactivate the Weil der Stadt-Calw section of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway under the name Hermann-Hesse-Bahn . A shuttle service between Calw and Renningen is to be set up first, running parallel to the S-Bahn on the Renningen-Weil section of the city. For this purpose, an additional platform with a corresponding siding is to be built at Renningen station, since the platforms of the S-Bahn do not match the height of the trains likely to be used. Several planning approval decisions have already been made for the project and the state of Baden-Württemberg has already agreed to provide financial support. It is planned to reopen the route by December 2020.

The station is one of the first three in Germany to introduce new spoken announcements from December 2019.

Rail operations

The station is served by lines S6 and S60 of the Stuttgart S-Bahn. The S-Bahn to Stuttgart Schwabstraße stop on platform 2, and those to Weil der Stadt and Böblingen on platform 3. According to Deutsche Bahn AG, the Renningen train station corresponds to station category 5.
