The Weil der Stadt station is located at 25.6 km of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway , which ends here because the section to Calw is no longer used. The station is the starting and ending point of the S6 line of the Stuttgart S-Bahn .

history

Planning and construction

In September 1862 the Royal Württemberg State Railroad examined the construction of a railway line from Illingen via Vaihingen an der Enz and Weil der Stadt to Calw. However, she did not pursue this project for long. Because the Württemberg government negotiated with the Baden government to build the starting point for the Nagold Valley Railway in Pforzheim . The Baden government approved the construction in February 1865.

On August 13, 1865, the state parliament decided to build a railway line from Zuffenhausen via Leonberg to Calw. This also included the connection of Weil der Stadt to the rail network. The state railway laid the station north of the city. The reception building turned out to be very representative. It has been preserved to this day, but is now used for other purposes.

State Railroad Time

The opening of the second section of the line from Ditzingen to Weil der Stadt took place on December 1, 1869. The state railway began operating the lengthy section through the Black Forest to Calw on June 20, 1872. The Black Forest Railway lost its importance after the completion of the Gäubahn in September 1879. A planned branch from Weil der Stadt to Pforzheim was never built.

Reichsbahn time

The Deutsche Reichsbahn thinned the continuous connections on the Black Forest Railway . In 1939 there were only nine trains on weekdays that ran directly between Stuttgart Hbf and Calw. Most of the trains from Stuttgart ended in Leonberg or Renningen . Nevertheless, the Reichsbahn electrified the Black Forest Railway to Weil der Stadt on December 18, 1939, thus connecting the small town to the suburban traffic in Stuttgart . Through trains from Stuttgart to Calw and in the opposite direction were changed in Weil der Stadt.

Federal Railroad Time

The S-Bahn Stuttgart project emerged from the on-site electrical operation in the 1960s. Because the city should be the end point of one of the lines. On October 1, 1978, the Deutsche Bundesbahn put the S 6 S-Bahn into operation. This finally ended the continuous traffic from Stuttgart to Calw. Rail buses operated between Weil der Stadt and Calw until the Federal Railroad stopped passenger traffic on this section of the route on May 29, 1983. Freight traffic to Althengstett ended after a landslide near Ostelsheim in March 1988.

For years, the district of Calw and the Württembergische Schwarzwaldbahn Calw – Weil der Stadt association have been trying to reactivate the line in order to extend the S 6 to Calw if necessary.

Reception building

With its extremely wide, three-storey central building with a flat hipped roof, the station building looks almost atypical of the otherwise rather slim design of the Royal Württemberg State Railways. To the left and right of the central building are two one-story extensions. The facade of the building is made of red sandstone , which can also be found in buildings in Weil der Stadt and the surrounding area (e.g. city church, arched pillars at the town hall). The frames of the windows and doors are made of yellow sandstone and create a contrast. The station name WEILDERSTADT is also carved into yellow sandstone on both extensions.

Railway systems

The station is served by the Stuttgart S-Bahn. He owns two platform tracks. The S-Bahn line S6 starts on platform 1 or platform 2.
