The Leonberg train station is located at the 14.4 kilometer of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway and is a station in the Stuttgart S-Bahn network .
history
Planning and construction
A horse-drawn bus has operated between Leonberg and Stuttgart since 1840 . However, it could carry a maximum of twelve people and only drove the route two to three times a week.
In 1863, the representatives of the regional offices in Calw and Nagold demanded a connection to the railway network for their districts. Christian Maier, Oberamtmann of the Oberamt Leonberg , agreed and suggested a route over Leonberg and Weil der Stadt . But the Upper Office in Böblingen also wanted to benefit from the new means of transport and the Böblingen MP Otto Elben presented his plans for a route via Böblingen to the state parliament . The senior officials from the Black Forest distanced themselves from the discussion. Whether via Leonberg or Böblingen seemed secondary to them. There were long debates in the state parliament. The representative from Leonberg had to give the parliament the certainty that the Oberamt Leonberg was more important in agriculture and trade. It is questionable whether he succeeded or whether the MPs finally opted for the cheaper proposal.
With a narrow majority, the state parliament decided on August 13, 1865 the variant through the Strohgäu and thus secured the connection to Leonberg.
The construction of the Black Forest Railway took longer than planned. Major earthworks were necessary, especially in the section between Ditzingen and Leonberg. The station was built west of Leonberg on the border with Eltingen. The state railroad built a more representative station building for the Oberamtsstadt than usual on the route. It consisted of a three-story head building, with a one-story extension. A polygonal part of the building adorned the end of the extension.
Operational development
On December 1, 1869, the Royal Württemberg State Railways opened the Ditzingen – Weil section of the city . In the following years the population of the city increased only very moderately. In the small area there was hardly any space for an up-and-coming industrial settlement. The Black Forest Railway lost its importance after the completion of the Gäubahn .
Since September 30, 1932, the Black Forest Railway has had a second track on the Ditzingen – Leonberg section. The electrification between Zuffenhausen and Leonberg with simultaneous integration into the Stuttgart suburban traffic , and thus also an improved transport offer, took place on May 15, 1939.
As a modernization measure, the Deutsche Bundesbahn tore down the historic station building in 1967 and inaugurated a new one-story flat roof building on January 22, 1969. On October 1, 1978, the S-Bahn line S 6, from Stuttgart Schwabstrasse to Weil der Stadt, replaced the previous electric local trains .
In July 2016, the city of Leonberg's newly built multi-storey car park opposite the train station was inaugurated. Of the 460 parking spaces on 17 levels, 300 are rented to Robert Bosch GmbH , which operates a research center nearby. In May 2020, a “ bike house ” was opened next door .
outlook
In July 2020, the Transport Committee of the Stuttgart Region Association decided to conclude a financing agreement on the preliminary planning for the barrier-free expansion of the S-Bahn station.
Rail operations
The station is served by the Stuttgart S-Bahn lines S6 and S60. The S-Bahn to Stuttgart Schwabstraße stop at track 1, the main platform, and at track 2, the S-Bahn to Weil der Stadt and Böblingen. Track 3 is used by ending trains from Stuttgart Schwabstrasse. Track 4 (without platform) is no longer used.
The platform edges are about 20 centimeters lower than the floor height of the vehicles used there, so entry is not barrier-free.
Leonberg train station is assigned to price class 3.
