The Rankbachbahn is a 14.253 kilometer long railway line from Renningen to Böblingen in the southwest of the Stuttgart region . The Rankbachbahn is named after the Rankbach . The line is a branch line that is treated like a main line in terms of signals .

history

The Rankbachbahn was opened on October 1st, 1915 as a single track. On September 29, 1970, passenger traffic between Renningen and Sindelfingen was stopped. The S-Bahn Stuttgart was at the time in the planning stage and needed capacity on sections of the route between Stuttgart and Würzburg and the Gäubahn . For the relocation of freight trains to the Rankbachbahn, the line was expanded in the early 1970s and electrified since April 10, 1972, thus gaining the necessary capacity. The line's top speed was increased from 60 km / h to 80 km / h. Since June 10, 2010, the Rankbachbahn has again passenger traffic as part of the Stuttgart S-Bahn network (S 60). Regular operation started on June 14, 2010 on the Böblingen to Maichingen route. The remaining section to Renningen was opened on December 8, 2012 on the now largely double-track line.

business

The route is used for freight traffic and by the S-Bahn.

Freight transport

The route is used for freight transport

There are around 40 freight trains on the route every day, most of them starting or finishing in Sindelfingen.

From late March to mid-October 2008 and early January to early December 2012, the route between Sindelfingen and Renningen was closed due to the S60 expansion. All freight trains were diverted to Kornwestheim via the Gäubahn and the freight connection curve at the Stuttgart North Station .

passenger traffic

After the suspension of passenger traffic from Renningen to Sindelfingen in 1970, only individual regional trains under the designation R71 ran from Sindelfingen via Böblingen to Horb until December 10, 2004 . They were called "Daimler trains" because their timetable was tailored to the shift times of the Daimler AG plant at Sindelfingen train station .

Expansion to S-Bahn line S 60

For the S-Bahn service, almost the entire line was double-tracked , the Böblingen station was rebuilt, all stations and platforms were rebuilt and the level crossings removed. The section between the Sindelfingen and Böblingen stations remained single-track. In Böblingen station, the S60 uses track 5, the platform of which was brought to the length of a short S-Bahn train to a height of 96 cm; Regional trains and IC towards Horb use platform 5 in its southern part.

The first construction phase "Böblingen" was completed at the end of March 2007. The main work for the second planning phase “Sindelfingen” took place in 2008, so the route was completely closed from the end of March to October 2008. The planning approval decision for the third construction phase “Magstadt – Renningen” came in late summer 2008. Construction work should begin in 2009 and the line should be opened at the end of 2010. Due to additional agreements to replace the level crossings in Magstadt and Renningen (e.g. purchase of land), the planned commissioning was initially postponed to the end of 2011 and was finally scheduled for the end of 2012. The S 60 went into operation on December 8, 2012 along its entire length.

In 2012, costs of at least 151 million euros were expected, including 13 million euros for 6 km of noise barriers. Deutsche Bahn also expected significant additional costs due to supplements . In total, the expansion ultimately cost 189.3 million euros. The Stuttgart region assumes 48 million euros of this as well as a maximum of 5 million for further financing risks. Deutsche Bahn assumes non-eligible project costs of 37.4 million euros. At the start of the project at the end of the 1990s, expenses of 77 million D-Marks were under discussion; according to a planning and cost status from 2002, 90 million euros were estimated.

Commissioning of the S 60

The Stuttgart Region Association and Deutsche Bahn determined that an S-Bahn shuttle service between Böblingen, Sindelfingen and Maichingen would be technically and financially possible from summer 2010, with reasonable additional costs for the signaling technology. By resolution of the Transport Committee on September 30, 2009, there has been a shuttle service every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Monday to Friday since June 14, 2010, and since June 12, 2011 also on weekends and public holidays. S-Bahn multiple units of the DB class 420 were used . The trains had connections in Böblingen to the S 1 from Herrenberg, the S 1 from Stuttgart and the Schönbuchbahn .

Since December 8, 2012, the reinforcement trains of the S 6 Stuttgart – Leonberg (-Weil der Stadt) have been tied through to Böblingen. So far , trains running to Weil der Stadt are winged as S 6 / S 60 in Renningen : The rear railcar goes to Böblingen, the front one to Weil der Stadt. The other previous S6 amplifier trains were extended from Leonberg to Böblingen with one exception - now as S 60 ; Here too, only the rear railcar runs between Renningen and Böblingen. Outside the rush hour, shuttle trains run between Renningen and Böblingen, without a direct connection in Renningen. In Böblingen, on the other hand, there are good connections to the S 1 and the Schönbuchbahn in all timetable locations.

Since October and December 2015, some S-Bahn trains have been extended from short to full (two units) during rush hour .

At the Sindelfingen and Maichingen stops, only the eastern track has a platform . This is operated in both directions. Therefore, the S-Bahn trains traveling in the direction of Böblingen must use the opposite track.

A forecast made in 2010 expected between 6,300 (near Renningen) and 12,400 passengers per day (near Böblingen) for the year 2025. In 2020, the number of daily passengers on the route was given as almost 10,000.

outlook

From 2019 additional S-Bahn vehicles are to be procured to a. to be able to offer every quarter of an hour on the S 60. For a 15-minute cycle between Sindelfingen and Renningen, a crossing track with a second platform edge and two new switches are required at Sindelfingen station. Furthermore, additional signals are necessary between Magstadt and Renningen Süd in order to reduce headway times. For the connection to Böblingen, adjustments in the Böblingen train station are necessary. The Stuttgart Region Association decided on April 22, 2020 to commission planning ( service phases 1 to 4) for these measures.

The route is to be integrated into the Stuttgart digital node by 2030 and equipped with digital interlockings , ETCS and automated driving .
