Tuolumne City is a census-designated place in Tuolumne County in the US state of California with a population of 1779 (2010).

geography

The place is 90 kilometers east of Stockton . Yosemite National Park begins on the eastern edge of Tuolumne City .

history

The first settlers to settle in the area around 1850 were predominantly gold prospectors . This also included the brothers Franklin, George, James and Jack (John) Summers as well as other family members and the place was initially called Summersville , later briefly after the local entrepreneur Charles Carter Carters . With the commissioning of a railway station of the Sierra Railway of California , the place was renamed Tuolumne Station in 1899 . The name, like those of the Tuolumne River and Tuolumne County, is of Indian origin. There are several versions of the meaning of the word Toulumne : “many stone houses”, “group of stone wigwams ”, “land of the mountain lions ” or “place of the croissants ”. Until the end of the 20th century, the residents of the village were primarily involved in the timber industry and the maintenance of railways. The head office of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians is located in Tuolumne City. The place is currently gaining in importance in tourism, as there is access to Yosemite National Park nearby. Tours lead to the Tuolumne Grove , where particularly impressive giant sequoias ( Sequoiadendron giganteum ) grow.
