List of grape varieties

Pinot nova is a fungus-resistant red wine variety ( PIWI ) from Austria. The variety is easy to recognize with the typical unlapped, pentagonal burgundy leaf. Because of its higher resistance to fungal pathogens, it is a good complement to Pinot Noir and St. Laurent. The wine of the variety is very reminiscent of St. Laurent.

origin

Austria, Klosterneuburg

ancestry

Is an interspecific crossing of Blauer Burgunder x Malverina by Ferdinand Regner at the Höhere Bundeslehranstalt and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing Klosterneuburg.

Crossing partner:

Malverina is a new breed from the Czech Republic and was developed by Vilém Kraus at the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscaping at the Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno in Lednice . It is a quadruple cross, where the varieties Frühroter Veltliner and Merlot were combined with resistance carriers (Rakiš ( Villard Blanc x Frühroter Veltliner ) × ( Merlot x Seibel 13666 )).

Ampelographic features

  • The shoot tip is open, slightly hairy, strong anthocyanin coloration; Half-upright shoot position.
  • The young leaves are green on the upper side and the underside has weak to absent hairs between the nerves.
  • The fully grown leaf is pentagonal with 3 lobes and has a pitched (V-shaped) profile. The main nerves on the upper side of the leaf are green and the blade is moderately waffled and moderately vesicular. The stalk bay is closed or overlapping with a bracket-shaped base. The stalk bay is not limited by nerves. Leaf teeth in the stalk bay and in the side bays are missing. Side bays have a shallow depth with a V shape; Underside of the leaf very weak to medium hair; no bristling of the main nerves.
  • The grape has a medium-long (3 cm) stem, is medium-long (14-18 cm) and medium-density. The basic cluster has a cylindrical shape with 1 - 3 wings - some grapes are missing or small. The berries are round (d = 14 mm) and have a low weight of individual berries (approx. 2 g). The berry skin is colored blue-black. The pulp is uncolored and has a neutral taste. The grape is not the same as Pinot Noir or the classic Burgundy clones, but is looser, larger and has medium-sized berries.

Maturity: medium

Properties, claims

  • The variety has very good winter frost resistance and regenerates well even after spring frosts. The resistance to Peronospora is very good and good against Oidium and Botrytis. There is also good tolerance to phomopsis, black rot and red burner. After autumn rainfall there is little tendency for the berries to burst.
  • The vine is rather vigorous and should not be planted on deep soils. For a red wine with a strong character, a location suitable for Pinot Noir should be selected. The grapes reach high quality when they can go through a slow final ripening.
  • The resistance properties enable reduced crop protection.
  • The variety is insensitive to sunburn, but needs good locations.

The variety characteristics are similar to the mother variety Pinot Noir and are more suitable for temperate climates and less easy to cultivate under very hot conditions.

Wine

The “red wine character” is significantly stronger than that of Pinot Noir. The fruity, low-acid wines are more reminiscent of St. Laurent than Pinot Noir. The tannin content requires a longer maturation, which also works very well in small wooden barrels. The wine has a good color intensity, more intense than that of Pinot Noir.

The composition of the red wine coloring has been controlled for many years. The undesired direct carrier dye (malvidin 3,5-diglucoside) can be detected, but was always below the limit of 15 mg / l in all research years.
