High Valley AVA has been a recognized wine-growing region in the US state of California since July 1, 2005 .

location

The vineyards are spread across the eastern part of Lake County , close to Clear Lake . The name Valley High ( high valley ) assets reflects the situation of the valley, which lies meters at an altitude from 490 to 910. The body of water in California's largest freshwater body moderate the climate, and the region is among the coolest in the state. On the other hand, due to the orientation of the valley, cooling sea breezes coming from the Pacific can influence the climate. Along with the breezes, the typical morning mist of the Pacific can also protect the valley floor from solar radiation. The cooler valley floor enables the cultivation of the early-ripening grape varieties Pinot Gris , Pinot Noir , Chardonnay , Riesling , Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer . The warmth-loving red grape varieties grow on the slopes not covered by fog.

The area of the High Valley partially overlaps with the definition of the Designation of Origin Clear Lake AVA .

geography

The valley is approx. 14 km long and a maximum of 4.8 km wide. It has an east-west orientation, which is rare in this area, as a result of volcanic activity from Round Mountain in the valley. There are currently around 280 hectares of vineyards. The vines are mostly recent plantings. There are also some old Zinfandel and Muscat vines from the 1870s that the Ogulin family brought from Slovenia .
