Planted acreage: 1 hectare (2 acre)

The Covelo AVA (recognized since February 16, 2006) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is approximately 70 km north of Ukiah in the Mendocino County administrative area . Although barely 1 hectare of vineyards is currently planted, Covelo has been awarded a protected designation of origin by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives . This is justified with the unusual climate ; Covelo is shielded from the Pacific Ocean by higher peaks and, despite its relative proximity to the coast, has a continental climate. In addition, the temperature differences between day and night are very pronounced; a fact that is important for quality viticulture.
