Mendocino AVA (recognized since June 15, 1984) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is near the town of Ukiah in the coastal administrative area of Mendocino County , north of the well-known Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley areas . In addition to existing subregions, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau is currently proceeding to set up new AVAs in the Sanel Valley and Ukiah Valley along the Russian River . The Mendocino AVA growing region is known for the cultivation of the late-ripening grape varieties Carignan , Charbono , Grenache , Petite Sirah , Syrah and Zinfandel . Pinot Noir is grown in the cooler area of ​​the Anderson Valley . This sub-region is known for its sparkling wine production.
