Redwood Valley AVA (recognized since December 23, 1996) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in Mendocino County, not far from the city of Ukiah . To the east of this is the Potter Valley AVA wine-growing region . The first vineyards in the wine-growing region with a protected designation of origin (= American Viticultural Area ) were laid out in the 19th century by immigrants of Italian descent. Since the valley is around 60 m higher than the nearby vineyards, early-ripening grape varieties such as Pinot Noir can also thrive here.
