Potter Valley AVA (recognized since October 13, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the Mendocino County administrative area . The wine-growing region with a protected designation of origin is located in the vicinity of the town of Potter Valley , approx. 16 km northeast of Ukiah . To the west of this is the Redwood Valley AVA wine-growing region . The proximity to the cool Eel River enables viticulture on the one hand and the fog rising from the river also favors the formation of noble rot for the production of dessert wines from Riesling , Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon .
