Despite the impressive size of the defined area, the sites actually suitable for viticulture are rare. Most of the area is covered with the coastal redwood and the Douglas fir . Although plantings have been known since the end of the 19th century, the currently planted vineyard area is only 30 hectares. The most important grape variety is the Zinfandel .
