McDowell Valley AVA (recognized February 27, 1981) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the Mendocino County administrative area . The wine-growing region with a protected designation of origin is located on a hillside above the Russian River at an altitude of about 350 m. Compared to the surrounding area, the climate is cooler and thus enables commercial viticulture. There is currently only one winery within the wine region, the McDowell Valley Winery. The remaining vines are processed by goods outside the region of origin.
