Negroamaro (also: Negramaro or Negro Amaro ) is an Italian grape variety . It can be found mainly in the southern Italian region of Apulia , where it has been cultivated for thousands of years and makes very good, strong red wines .

Negroamaro contains rich fruit aromas of black currant and cherry. Until recently it was mainly used for blending wines ; in the meantime there is also increasing varietal expansion. The most famous DOC area for Negroamaro is Salice Salentino , where the vine is usually blended with a little Malvasia Nera .

The syrup-like spice specialty Vincotto is also obtained from dried grapes of the Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera varieties .

The Italian rock band Negramaro derived its name from this grape variety.

Descendants

The grape varieties Malvasia Nera di Lecce and Malvasia Nera di Brindisi are a natural cross between the Malvasia Bianca Lunga x Negroamaro varieties .
