Suisun Valley AVA has been a recognized wine-growing region in the US state of California since December 27, 1982 and part of the national Napa Valley AVA .

location

The vineyards are distributed over the administrative district of Solano County . The growing area borders on the south of the famous Napa Valley . The eponymous Suisun Valley lies between the Vaca Mountains and the Mt. George Range in the west. The valley ends at Suisun Bay in the south while the north was defined by the border with Napa County.

climate

The close proximity to the Bay of San Pablo and the Bay of San Francisco results in a comparatively cool climate and thus enables the cultivation of the early ripening grape varieties Pinot Gris or Riesling, although the average sunshine duration is very high.

According to the Winkler and Amerine climate reference model developed at the University of California, Davis , the area was classified as Class III.

geology

The soil is predominantly loamy in nature. Depending on the position, it is more of a sandy loam soil or a calcareous loam soil.

The area is irrigated via the Putah South Canal , which is fed by Lake Berryessa and is managed by the operating company Solano Irrigation District .
