Howell Mountain AVA (or Howell Mountain American Viticultural Area, recognized December 30, 1983 and revised February 27, 1987) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the national Napa Valley AVA . The wine-growing region in the Vaca Mountains in the northeast of the Napa Valley lies above the city of St. Helena , Howell Mountain AVA was the first official sub-region of the Napa Valley AVA when it received the status of an American Viticultural Area in 1987 .
The majority of the Howell Mountain's vineyards are at an altitude of 420 m and 670 m . Although the area does not benefit from the cooling effects of the mist rising from the Bay of San Pablo , the effect of the altitude is sufficient to moderate the heat. The soil of volcanic origin is very porous and its capacity to store daytime heat is poor. This creates a pronounced difference between day and night temperatures in the wine-growing region, which ensures that the berries have a sufficient acidity and gives the wine a good structure.
