Atlas Peak AVA (or Atlas Peak American Viticultural Area, recognized January 22, 1992) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and part of the national Napa Valley AVA . The area is northeast of the city of Napa . The vineyards on the western slopes of the Vaca Mountains are slightly higher than the surrounding area. Therefore, unlike other areas of the Napa Valley, the wine-growing region does not benefit from the cooling mist that rises from the Pacific .
The soil of volcanic origin is very porous and its capacity to store daytime heat is poor. This results in a marked difference between day and night temperatures of approx. 12-15 ° C in the Atlas Peak wine-growing region. This difference in temperature helps keep the acidity in the berries extremely high and gives the wines a beautiful structure.
