The festival of Federweiss is celebrated every year on the third weekend in October in the Palatinate city of Landau , which has the largest wine-growing area of all German municipalities . With over 100,000 visitors, the Federweiss festival in the southern Palatinate is the wine festival that is most popular.
history
The Landau festival around the Federweiss , the most widespread variant of the New Wine , emerged from one of the "Bitzler festivals" common in the region; It was first celebrated in 1953. In the meantime, in terms of public interest, it has left even traditional wine festivals far behind in the southern Palatinate region. Especially since 1997 when the German Wine Festival in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse took over the christening of the new vintage , the number of visitors has increased from year to year. Among the Palatinate wine festivals, it ranks third behind the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (600,000 visitors) and the German Wine Festival (200,000 at the Neustadt wine festival procession alone on the final day).
Duration and location
The festival of Federweiss lasts from Thursday to Sunday. The center of the festival is the town hall square in the city center. Sunday as the last day of the festival has been open for shopping since the 1970s ; another 50,000 interested parties use this offer.

The special festive atmosphere thrives on the town hall square with its wooden wine booths that have been rebuilt over and over again for decades . The numerous wine bars in downtown Landau also take part in the festival.
The days with the most outstanding events are Thursday and Sunday. The opening will be carried out on Thursday by the Lord Mayor together with the German Wine Queen . The Landau wine princess of the past season will also be bid farewell and the newly elected will be crowned and introduced to her office. This then carries out the baptism of the new vintage in the evening. The name was previously selected by a jury from the proposals received, which are now regularly more than a thousand and are mainly submitted via the Internet. In 2007 the successful namesake won a day trip on an original Landau ; this is a carriage that was probably invented in the city. The highlights of the final day are the musical morning pint at 11:30 a.m. and the shopping center in the afternoon.
