Stags Leap District AVA (recognized since January 27, 1989) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the national Napa Valley AVA . The area is approximately 10 km north of the city of Napa . The name "Stag's Leap" means "Hirschsprung" and goes on a legend of earlier in the Napa Valley -based Wappo Indians back. From a rocky hill in the middle of the valley, a deer escaped its hunters with a brave jump. Ancient rock carvings of the deer can still be found. The Stags Leap District was the first appellation in California that was created exclusively on the basis of a certain soil condition and thus corresponded to the term terroir . The soils formed here 10 million years ago and consist of both loam and clay washed ashore from the nearby Napa River and eroded volcanic rock from the Vaca Mountains .

Stags Leap District is particularly known for single-variety wines made from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety . In the 1976 Paris Wine Jury , a 1973 Cabernet wine from the Stag's Leap Wine Cellars owned by Warren Winiarski took first place in the red wine category, relegating well-known Bordeaux wineries to the lower ranks.
